Dr. Turner’s research has a primary focus on his Multicultural Distress Theory, which centers around the emotional and physiological effects of stress on marginalized people due to their exposure to the dominant culture. Multicultural Stress can be defined as the negative emotional state associated with exposure to majority culture, the experience of psychological and/or physiological distress that occurs when a person is exposed to an uncomfortable sense of discord, disharmony, confusion, or conflict due to a change in their cultural environment.
Examples:
A woman feels added pressure, because she is the first female to hold her current position in her organization.
A lesbian would like to come out to coworker, but is concerned that will change the dynamic amongst her peers.
